An Orchestra of Laptops
When Ge Wang was a boy, his dad gave him a guitar to play, and his grandparents instilled in him the love of making useful things with his hands, like crafts and small structures.
Those two childhood interests would end up blending into what he does today. Wang is now a 32-year-old professor of both music and computer science, at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. He composes, programs, and creates computerized acoustics, turning electronic devices like cell phones and laptops into musical instruments.
In 2008, Wang founded the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, or SLOrk for short. It consists of Wang and his students performing compositions using only their laptops.
