From the fanciest restaurants to the hungriest residents



Every year, 6 million tons of food are dumped throughout California, according to a recent state report. Millions of tons of fruit and vegetables rot in California’s fields, grocery stores throw away unused foods, and restaurants scrap tens of thousands of edibles every year. Some programs allow restaurants, for example, to donate unused food. But the vast majority of California’s eateries don’t participate in them. Many fear liability and lawsuits. But "Food Runners" is a 30-year-old non-profit whose volunteers simply take leftover food from local restaurants, hotels, and caterers, and give it to the city’s shelters and charities.
