Laughter Yoga
When you think of Yoga, you might think of peaceful meditation, serenity, holding graceful poses in stillness and calm… And you’d be wrong. You see, a new form of yoga is sweeping the nation, and it’s actually pretty loud and goofy. Laughter Yoga was created by an Indian physician, Dr. Madan Kataria. His idea was that people could relieve stress, in many cases ease pain, and in some cases even cure disease- just through laughing. Dr. Kataria started in 1995 with just 5 people in a park. Today, his technique has become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 6 thousand so-called “laughter clubs” in 60 countries. I visited an Oakland-based club, led by certified Laughter Yoga leader Purvi Jani.
